I am a descendant of Donald Stewart and have information on this branch of our family. This stone I learnt was erected by some of our family here in Canada circa 1900. If you are related to these Stewarts or other Stewarts from Skye, I would love to hear from you. Perhaps we can exchange notes.

It is possibly a long shot ! Donald Stewart died after 1881 at Portree, Skye when he was 88yrs old on the census, he had a daughter Flora Stewart B1803 D1838 at Harlosh, married in 1829 to Norman Macphee. Donald Stewarts wife appears to be Mary MacMillan...............

I also am a descendant of Donald Stewart and his son Archibald B1779 D1865. My father did some work on the family tree before he passed away. I think it goes Laughlin B?, Kenneth B1806, Kenneth B1837, Gordon B1871, Eric B1895, Eric B1927 and me Eric B1960.

Hello Eric, I knew your father and we corresponded over the years. We thought we were related as our families lived in the same area very close together. I am a descendant of Donald Stewart born 1744. Our family had this grave stone placed on the chapel wall in the late 1800s. Archibald had no surviving sons, though i know he had one illegitimate son, I don't believe it was Laughlin. I have much information on the family including pictures. I will be on Skye for a visit shortly. Please feel free to contact me.

Hi Randall, I was on Skye visiting from NZ mid September 2018. I was there to do further research on my Stewart/Matheson/MacKinnon family all from Braes, Skye. I have traced my Stewart's back to 1700's and possibly 1708. So far as far as I can prove I start with John Stewart and Flora Nicholson who had 2 children John and Marion Stewart. Marion married James Stewart ( double Stewart) and they were my grt, grt grandparents. They lived at Peinchorran, crofters. John married an Isabella and their son Angus was spokes person at the Napier commission on behalf fo the Braes crofters during the Battle of the Braes fame.James and Marion had a son Donald who married Christy Matheson. They had 7 children and my grandfather, John Stewart was born in 1877, they lived at Gedinatilor and the Matheson's had moved from Tormichaig to Balmeanach.James died young so Donald was the only recorded child. Marion had another child, Flora MacMillan and some question if she married the father, Angus macMillan but Flora was recognised as a macMillan but Marion kept the name Stewart? Another possible connection Christy Matheson's father Ronald had a sister I think Jane who married a Norman Stewart??? Cheers Michelle

Wow Michelle, you have incredible research on your family tree and so generous of you to share ! MY only link was the one about Flora Stewart that I added in August, there is a wonderful book called HARLOSH A Rock and a Flame by Angus MacPhee ~ Angus himself told me how all the Harlosh folk were connected, sadly he died in 2011 before his book was published, all about the families of Harlosh that includes Flora Stewarts husband etc, it is full of photos and history of those times, a time when families survived hard times and poverty, MY great grandfather John Macdonald of Roskhill also spoke at the Napier Commission and it is wonderful to read his own words ! John was a Tailor married to Effie MacPhie his family were all from Harlosh, and areas nearby. I have been to Skye many times, last year with my children, the old crofts still standing, the scenery unrivaled ! Genealogy has been my passion for MANY years always finding new information is so rewarding ! so well done you !.................Flora Macdonald .

Donald Stewart, my grt grandfather was a MasterTailor from Braes and my grandfather John Stewart was also trained as a Tailor but became a seaman and met my grandmother in Tasmania. Donald’s daughter, Anne married a MacIntosh also a Tailor. I still have to tie up ends and add extended family to my Stewart’s from Skye. I have another friend from Australia who has a Hames Stewart from Skye who immigrated to Victoria Australia. There didn’t seem to be many Stewart families on Skye and I rather think most might be related. If I find any connection I will let you know. Cheers Michelle
